Meet the Artists ~ Their Personal Insights into Quilt Art

Twila Blume: On her interest in quilting:

"Growing up as a Mennonite, I thought quilting was only for elderly women like my Grandmother until I wanted to make a quilt from scraps of my childhood dresses. Since initially pursuing quilting for that purpose, I have changed my perception completely, as my interest lies mostly in art quilts and my pursuit of being an art quilter."

Ruth Cohen: Designing quilts:

“Designs can be abstract, pictorial, geometric, flat or three-dimensional; pieced or appliqued; or a combination – inspiration can come from almost anywhere."

Anne Datko: On Patterns and Designing quilts:

“My greatest pleasure is in building fabric collages using the amazing commercial fabric now available. I combine one fabric with another, sometimes adding a touch of a hand-dyed fabric, but always letting the patterns and colors lead me."

Melinda Lowy: Designing quilts:

“Reading books on art and being exposed to various types of art gives me inspiration. Nature is another never-ending source with respect to colors and design.”

Judy Lundberg:  Quilting as an art form:

“In the same way an artist uses paint, a quilter uses bits of fabric and combines them into a larger picture, either in the traditional form, as a bed covering, or as art to decorate a room.”

Margreta Silverstone: On designing quilts:

“I want my work to be a source of healing for the spirit.”

Linda Syverson Guild: On designing quilts:

“I love the art of design. Fabric is a vehicle that enables me to express my architectural education in the color, line, and geometry of my work.”
